Project |01 Motivational Interviewing in Parent Training for Autism

This research study focuses on enhancing parent engagement in early intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using a motivational framework. This study evaluates the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI; Miller & Rollnick, 2013), a well-researched method that targets individuals’ motivation for and commitment to change. Parents participate in Motivational Interviewing while completing internet-based parent training that teaches how to increase social communication in young children with ASD (Improving Parents as Communication Teachers: Project ImPACT; Ingersoll & Dvortcsak, 2010).

Project |02 Supporting Emotion Regulation in Young Children with Autism

Many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience difficulties with regulating their emotions; however, interventions targeting this skill are designed for older children and adolescents with ASD. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Regulation of Emotional Lability in Autism Spectrum Disorder through Caregiver Supports (RELACS) intervention when implemented with parents of preschool-age children with ASD. Intervention sessions teach parents to identify the meaning(s) underlying dysregulated behavior and support effective emotion regulation in their children. Intervention sessions are held in participants’ homes over eight consecutive weeks.
